The Linkbait in SEO

    * Linkbait is a term coined about content that compels other sites to link to it
    * Successful linkbait is a holy grail of organic SEO - consider How Easy Is It To Bait For Links?
    * Consider: It's more useful to linkbait particular companies or websites, usually by writing about them (gosh!)
    * Breaking news, Tools, Interviews, How To Articles or Beginners guides or top ten (20, 30....etc) lists usually make for decent linkbait
    * Successful linkbait can be one or two blogs in your niche linking to you.
    * If you are interested in Linkbait, consider Lyndon's introduction to linkbait for beginners on the Hobo blog or indeed his linkbait coaching service.
    * If you set out from the beginning to make your site a resource for your industry, you'll attract links from other sites naturally (especially if you tell them about it).
    * In the end successful linkbait is about useful or interesting content and usually who you know in the networks.

370 Passwords you should not Use On Twitter

If you are on Twitter that means you registered an account with a password that is not awfully easy to guess. As you may know, Twitter prevents people from doing just that by indicating that certain passwords such as 'password' (cough cough) and '123456' are too obvious to be picked.

It just so happens that Twitter has hard-coded all banned passwords on the sign-up page. All you need to do to retrieve the full list of unwelcome passwords is take a look at the source code of that page.

Do a simple search for 'twttr.BANNED_PASSWORDS' and voila, there they are, all 370 of them.

This is not a security issue, of course, and in fact it's helpful to distribute the list so you can check if your favorite password that you use for other services might not be as fail-proof as you'd like to think. For the full list, simply download this TXT file, but here is a couple:

* Password
* testing
* Naked
* Stupid
* twitter
* 123456
* Secret
* Please
* beavis
* Butthead
* Internet
* Hooters

What would be interesting to know is if Twitter got this list from someplace else, or if they actually analyze which passwords were most commonly chosen by its tens of millions of users in the past, rendering them 'too obvious'. If the latter, that means this list is probably representative of most Web services.

Link Spamming

Spamdexing involves a number of methods, such as repeating unrelated phrases, to manipulate the relevancy or prominence of resources indexed by a search engine, in a manner inconsistent with the purpose of the indexing system.Some consider it to be a part of search engine optimization, though there are many search engine optimization methods that improve the quality and appearance of the content of web sites and serve content useful to many users. Search engines use a variety of algorithms to determine relevancy ranking. Some of these include determining whether the search term appears in the META keywords tag, others whether the search term appears in the body text or URL of a web page. Many search engines check for instances of spamdexing and will remove suspect pages from their indexes. Also, people working for a search-engine organization can quickly block the results-listing from entire websites that use spamdexing, perhaps alerted by user complaints of false matches. The rise of spamdexing in the mid-1990s made the leading search engines of the time less useful.

The success of Google at both producing better search results and combating keyword spamming, through its reputation-based Page Rank link analysis system, helped it become the dominant search site late in the 1990s. Although it has not been rendered useless by spamdexing, Google has not been immune to more sophisticated methods. Google bombing is another form of search engine result manipulation, which involves placing hyperlinks that directly affect the rank of other sites. Google first algorithmically combated Google bombing on January 25, 2007.

The earliest known reference to the term spamdexing is by Eric Convey in his article "Porn sneaks way back on Web,".

Search Engine Optimization - Filters, Penalties, and Updates

Over the years search engine optimization has developed into an art. It is necessary learning a bit about its basic components like filters, penalties, and updates. It was quite easy and convenient in the beginning. People used to get enough back links to their sites and relied heavily on targeted keywords and key phrases to get search engine spiders attracted to their sites and achieve search engine optimization in the process. With the evolution of SEO techniques the process began to take a complex turn. Neither links nor the keywords are as important today as they once were. Even relevancy of contents that dominated the SEO process until now is gradually taking a back seat with new methodologies and techniques coming up every now and then.

Leading search engines like Google prefer brands to other forms of identification of the sites to be displayed on their search pages. In the process they have created filters and penalties for the aspirant webmasters. Accidentally generating the first batch of brands in their attempt to stop artificial anchor text manipulation by unscrupulous webmasters, the process was later adopted as useful process of finding out genuine sites instead of the fake and manipulative ones.

Growing complexities in search algorithms have now blurred the dividing lines between filters, penalties and bugs. The issues came up first in December 2007 when many sites hitherto ranked as no.1 or 2 were relegated to lower positions overnight. Sometimes later Google sorted out the problem though. Making necessary changes in the algorithms that caused real relevant pages go down in ranking, the emphasis again is turned on regular updating of data and the website as a whole.

Since 2005 however Google has changed its outlook regarding the structure of search results. Unless such links have "rel=no follow" tag, they are likely to affect your page rank on the search engine result page. Buying links without using the tag could render a webmaster spammer on the web. Since a number of social websites have been using the tag effectively and eroding link value, links that were part of a reliable publisher creating link worthy contents are no more the favorites for search engine optimization.

Shopping cart software

Shopping cart software is software used in e-commerce to assist people making purchases online, analogous to the American English term 'shopping cart'. In British English it is generally known as a shopping basket, almost exclusively shortened on websites to 'basket'.

The software allows online shopping customers to accumulate a list of items for purchase, described metaphorically as "placing items in the shopping cart". Upon checkout, the software typically calculates a total for the order, including shipping and handling (i.e. postage and packing) charges and the associated taxes, as applicable.
Online shopping

Online shopping is the process consumers go through to purchase products or services over the Internet. An online shop, eshop, e-store, internet shop, webshop, webstore, online store, or virtual store evokes the physical analogy of buying products or services at a bricks-and-mortar retailer or in a shopping mall.

The metaphor of an online catalog is also used, by analogy with mail order catalogs. All types of stores have retail web sites, including those that do and do not also have physical storefronts and paper catalogs. Online shopping is a type of electronic commerce used for business-to-business (B2B) and business-to-consumer (B2C) transactions.

Link Farms

    * A link farm is any group of web sites that all hyperlink to every other site in the group
    * Although some link farms can be created by hand, most are created through automated programs and services.
    * A link farm is a form of spamming the index of a search engine (sometimes called spamdexing or spamdexing).
    * Google is really good at spotting and devaluing most link farms

Selling Links
    * Google will penalise your site if it discovers you are selling links that influence Google's SERPS.
    * Most commonly, you will have a Toolbar PR penalty. This is bad if you sell links of course.
    * Google penalises pages a lot more than it penalises sites.
    * If you do sell links, you are supposed to NOFOLLOW them.
    * Google does not want the links you sell to influence or interfere with the way it ranks pages (via links).

Search Engine Optimization Helps You Reel in Prospects

Marketing on the Internet has been quite a significant, mainstream topic for nearly every business, and it constantly changes over time.

Banner advertising, pay-per-click ads, email newsletters, direct marketing via email, affiliate marketing, electronic press releases - any of these could be important in your online marketing mix, depending upon the specifics of your business and resources.

However, every company should be pursuing one online marketing method. It surprises me to find that even many software and tech companies are not. I'm talking about search engine optimization (SEO).

SEO means modifying your website's content and communications to ensure that the search engines find it when someone uses Google or another search engine to find information related to your business. This doesn't just happen automatically.

Google rolls out its own link-shortening service to compete with others

Search giant Google has launched its Google link-shortening service, creating a potential showdown with the rest of that industry and further expanding Google's reach into all manner of products involved with the practice of search engine optimization (SEO).

Link-shorteners are among the numerous subsidiary industries that have been created by the skyrocketing popularity of microblogging service Twitter. Services like Bit.ly, ow.ly, and tinyurl have provided a way for users to insert links into their posts while remaining within Twitter's 140-character limitation.

Twitter and Google have urbanized a close relationship in recent months, with the search giant finalizing a deal with Twitter to index the service's tweets in real time and embedding them in the main search results. Twitter has also reached a similar agreement with Microsoft, though that company does not fully incorporate its real-time results into main search pages.

Google's new service should further increase the options available to Twitter users and help businesses who already use other Google services better integrate social networking into their search engine optimization (SEO) campaigns.

Google Started Advertising Chrome in Newspaper

Google is a master of online advertising, and in latest days, has above ever been vilified as an opponent of the newspaper industry. People were justifiably surprised, then, to find ads for Chrome plastered all over a UK newspaper this morning.

The Metro is a free paper targeted at commuters in 16 cities. It's supposed to be the world's biggest free paper and the UK's fourth largest paper of any sort, with 1.3 million copies distributed every weekday.

Then here's the interesting part: today, the Metro is sporting a wraparound cover promoting Chrome.

Martin Bryant wrote, "The ad's front page . . . describes Chrome as 'A fast, new browser. Made for everyone.' . . . . Inside, the ad explains why Google made the browser and details its features such as the unique way it handles tabs and its Incognito mode . . ."

Finally, "The rear of the ad lists items such as 10 days of holiday left, about to expire; 27 emails between my wife and I hatching travel plans; 7 potential travel plans generated on 4 travel sites, 3 play lists generated on Specify.' It then goes on to read '6 tabs open, 0 crashes, 1 browser.'"

If this wraparound is successful, we may see more real-world ads from Google in the future.

Google Real-Time Search & PPC Advertising

Google's latest roll out of real-time search results has the search-engine-optimization (SEO) world in a tailspin. Google real-time search functionality pulls information from social networking sites like Twitter, Face book and My Space and displays them in the Google search results. Having this type of real-time information available has the potential for HUGE positive (and negative) implications for brand building.

Picture this: You are not running a pay-per-click (PPC) advertising campaign, but relying only on SEO to bring business to your site. A potential customer searches your business name on Google because they are interested in buying your product. In the search results, they see a live feed containing information from a disgruntled customer who was unhappy with your product and/or customer service. This dissuades your potential customer and they decide to buy the product you are selling somewhere else. FAIL. Google real-time search certainly didn't do this advertiser any favors.

Don't fear - there are benefits to having a pay-per-click campaign in place during this time of SEO doubt. First of all, your PPC ads will frequently show up higher than the Google real-time search feed so potential customers will see them before they have an opportunity to view the live feed. Second, the sponsored search results are typically viewed as trustworthy. This means that your message as a PPC advertiser will be stronger and likely displayed higher on the page than a random post from an anonymous Twitter user. Furthermore, the Google real-time search information will be constantly changing, while your PPC exposure can be controlled. Contact a qualified PPC Management Company for a free consultation.

In light of this new uncertainty in the SEO industry, marketers will likely race to get the top natural positions in order to appear above the real-time search feed. During this fierce competition for the top natural position using SEO; it appears that NOW might be the perfect opportunity to invest more of your marketing budget in your PPC advertising efforts in order to gain control of your online presence.

Facebook introduces more options tools

Facebook, the social networking world number one, took a step forward on Wednesday to open some parts of your site to strangers, to introduce more options in the tools of user privacy.

The changes make it easier for more than 350 million users of Facebook limit who sees your thoughts, videos, photos and other personal information, but also given the opportunity to show their information to a wider audience.

The initiative comes as Internet search engines like Google and Microsoft are increasingly interested in incorporating the growing user-generated content on social pages in its search results, and when Facebook is facing competition from rival services like Twitter, in the that all information is visible.

"Of course we want to respond to requests from the public to share information in all sorts of ways," said Elliot Schrage, vice president of Global Communications and Public Policy at Facebook.

Schrage said that Facebook users would be greeted on Wednesday with a message that presents new options for customizing your privacy.

The changes will not affect in any way Facebook policies that refer to the type of user information is shared with advertisers, he said.

Earlier this year, the Privacy Commissioner of Canada said that Facebook lacked certain safeguards to prevent unauthorized access to personal information of users by third party developers and manufacturers of games and challenges. Facebook addressed these concerns in August.

The new privacy features will make it easier for a Facebook user limit certain messages to some of his friends, like family, not colleagues.

Users will also have the ability to spread messages beyond the borders of Facebook, to be visible across the web. Facebook began testing the feature of public message with a limited group of users during the summer.

In October, Microsoft announced plans to incorporate labeled Facebook messages to the general public in their search results.

Google recently announced its initiative to incorporate certain Facebook data into your new product, a search engine in real time, although data are limited to special public profile page on Facebook, created by famous companies.

Search engine optimisation 'to evolve' with Google's incorporation of Twitter

Brands have been advised to consider reworking their search engine optimization strategy to keep in line with changes brought in by Google on December 7th.

The search engine recently announced that it will be incorporating live updates from sites such as Face book and Twitter into its results pages.

And online marketing director for Zoombits.co.uk Sam Tilston recommended that those involved in online PR make sure they "have a presence" in every element that is fed into these, so as to "control its message on Google".

He also noted that keywords would have to be included in Twitter posts, descriptions and accounts in order for the feed to be "properly optimized" by the search engine.

Partners involved in Google's scheme include My Space, Jaiku, Friend Feed and Identi.ca and, as well as feeds from these, news headlines and blog posts will also appear.

Furthermore, Google Trends has been altered to bring in Hot Trends that can track what is published by people on the web.

Online Video Marketing

Google has a significant growth in online video ads as the responsible marketing is becoming more sophisticated addressing consumers an interactive way, "a senior official of search giant Internet.

"The big change over the next three to five years will be advertising in videos," said Nikesh Arora, president of global sales operations and business development, in the Reuters Global Media Summit in New York.

"If you think there's a big change for consumers in place, the advertising dollars have to go back," said Arora Popularity on the growing worm in Internet videos.

Google, the leading search engine in the world, made a big bet on online video with its 2006 acquisition of You Tube by 1650 million dollars. The company recently said it would be profitable as YouTube not too distant future and Google is the force acting to boost the capacity of the site to generate advertising revenue.

In the third quarter, Google said that monetary values became 1000 million views of videos per week on You Tube.

Advertisers Arora said still trying to figure out how to harness the phenomenon of online videos, with many companies switching to the web simply made for TV ads.

You can not be clicked, you can not interact with it," he said.But he said that the ad formats for videos online inevitably evolve and improve, making them becomes a more attractive way for brands to promote their products.

Google Launches Sidewiki Allowing Anyone To Publish Comments On Your Website

Google provides a number of tools that are useful to companies that rely on the web to drive leads to their businesses. Google's Webmaster Tools help you understand how Google views your website, and how they can better understand your site. For a deep analysis of how people use your site, Google Analytics can provide insight. But the most important and useful tool to use on a daily basis is the Google Toolbar.

The latest feature to be added to the Toolbar is a new application called "Sidewiki," which essentially allows anyone to post comments in a browser sidebar on any website on the web. Once someone has signed in to the Google Toolbar they can post comments and read comments that have been posted by others.

Screenshot of Google Blog with Sidewiki turned off.

Screenshot of Google Blog with Sidewiki turned on.

Rather than posting the most recent entries in chronological order, Google is using an algorithm to promote the most relevant "useful, high-quality" entries to the top. Details on the alogorithm are, of course, not revealed, but Google has noted that they will include "use of sophisticated language", "user reputation", and "user history" to determine rank ordering of comments. Importantly, Google will decide which postings contain inappropriate content, not the owner of the site.

The first step is to "claim" your site's Sidewiki as the owner of the site… you can do this by installing the latest Google Toolbar with Sidewiki installed. As the site owner, any comments that you post will be displayed at the top of the list. Look at this as an opportunity to talk to your website visitors, point out useful features, highlight what separates you from your competition, etc.

Depending on the adoption rate among consumers, Sidewiki may be a significant and concerning development as it essentially takes control of some of the presentation of a company's website out of the hands of its owner. While Google has published Editorial Guidelines, the potential for abuse is certainly out there. A competitor could post a bad review or negative comment about your business… on YOUR site. There is no system currently in place to notify site owners that comments have been posted on their sites, so monitoring comments will be a manual effort.

Google has not allowed site owners to opt out of Sidewiki… at least not for now. The good news is that Google has a track record of launching new applications and services, getting feedback from the web community, and adjusting their offerings based on that feedback. As an example, Google has historically had serious accuracy issues and spam problems with their Maps product. When they began serving Maps more prominently in results for localized searches earlier this year, there was an outcry from the SEO community regarding the quality of the data. Google took a number of steps to develop tools to enhance listing accuracy, ultimately resulting in a "white listing" process for national clients.

Like other forms of social media including Twitter, Facebook, etc., it's a good idea to have someone dedicated to monitoring the online conversations about your brand, and engaging in the dialog in a genuine and meaningful way. Time will tell whether Sidewiki will be a compelling new social media dynamic like Twitter, or a relatively benign solution in search of a problem.
