The Forbes list of the 100 largest U.S. private companies is out. Kansas City's DeBruce Grain made the list at No. 74, as did Hallmark Cards at No. 91. Other Kansas and Missouri companies were Wichita's Koch Industries, at No. 2, and St. Louis' Enterprise Rent-a-Car, at No. 21.
The lead-in article to the list is on home engineering firm Black & Veatch, ranked No. 122 this year. Forbes says the company is making the turn from relying on old-line power-plant projects to more green initiatives. The company's water-projects business has been increasing, and "this nexus of energy and water is a large deal," says Chief Executive Len Rodman, who the magazine says "likes to see fuel, power and sustainability as one major piece."
